Birthday Night Turns Into Tragedy on Incomplete Highway
What was meant to be a joyful birthday celebration turned into an unimaginable nightmare in the early hours of Sunday morning. Three young friends, out to celebrate a birthday, met with a horrific accident on the incomplete Mumbai–Vadodara Highway near Badlapur in Maharashtra. Two of them lost their lives on the spot, while the third is currently battling for survival in an ICU.
The vehicle involved was a high-end BMW convertible — a luxury car that was being driven with its hood open at a staggering speed of 251 kmph. The crash was so violent that the car was reduced to a mangled wreck, and the impact scattered debris and remains across nearly half a kilometre of the highway.
What Happened on the Mumbai–Vadodara Highway?
Driver Lost Control at Deadly Speed
According to preliminary information gathered by police, the incident occurred around 2 AM near the Eranjad area in Badlapur. The group of friends was travelling from the Titwala side toward Badlapur when the driver suddenly lost control of the vehicle.
At 251 kmph, even a minor misjudgement can be fatal — and in the pitch darkness of an incomplete highway stretch, the driver failed to read the road conditions in time. The BMW slammed into a highway divider at full force, flipped over multiple times, and came to rest in a completely destroyed state. The occupants, who were not enclosed within the car due to its open convertible roof, were thrown out of the vehicle upon impact.
Adding a chilling dimension to the tragedy, a video has since gone viral on social media that was reportedly recorded inside the car just moments before the crash. The clip allegedly shows the speedometer of the BMW registering 251 kmph — a speed that is nearly impossible to control safely on any road, let alone an unfinished highway in the dark.
Two Young Lives Lost, One Fighting for Survival
The two individuals who lost their lives have been identified as:
- Yogesh Kishan Negi (24) — a resident of Badlapur, who was celebrating his 24th birthday that very night
- Rebecca Babu Jacob (22) — a resident of Bandra, Mumbai
The third person in the car, Angad Gill (26), a resident of Badlapur, survived the crash but sustained severe injuries. He has been admitted to the ICU at Fortis Hospital in Kalyan, where his condition is reported to be critical.
The tragic irony of the situation is hard to ignore — Yogesh Negi had turned 24 just hours before the crash, and the night out was entirely in his honour.
Post-Mortem Ordered, Families Yet to Give Statements
Senior Police Inspector Kishore Shinde of Badlapur West Police Station confirmed that the bodies of the deceased have been sent to the government hospital in Ulhasnagar for post-mortem examination.
Speaking about the circumstances of the crash, Inspector Shinde said that since the BMW was a convertible with an open roof, the occupants had no protection and were thrown out of the vehicle upon impact — a factor that directly contributed to the fatalities.
Who Was Behind the Wheel? Still Unknown
One of the key aspects of the investigation that remains unresolved is the identity of the driver. At this point, police have not been able to determine who was actually driving the BMW at the time of the crash. Since the family members of the deceased are in a state of deep shock and grief, authorities are waiting to record their statements before drawing conclusions.
