Every year on February 28th, India reveres National Science Day to commemorate the pivotal discovery made by CV Raman in 1928—the captivating Raman Effect. This phenomenon, bearing Raman’s name, unravels the intricate scattering of photons, unveiling the essence of light’s behavior.

Recognized for his extraordinary contribution, Raman was honored with the prestigious Nobel Prize in 1930, solidifying his place in scientific history.

During this significant occasion, educational institutions across the country come alive with a myriad of engaging activities. From spirited quiz competitions to enlightening seminars, the day ignites a fervor for knowledge and innovation among students and professionals alike.”

What exactly is the Raman Effect?

Well, according to the Ministry of Culture’s website, the Raman Effect is like a magic trick performed by molecules when they’re excited. Imagine light beams dancing through a clear, particle-free substance. Sometimes, these molecules get so excited that they scatter some of the light in different directions. Most of it stays the same, but a tiny bit changes color! This change in light color is what we call the Raman Effect.

Let's Step Back in Time to Explore the History of National Science Day!

Back in 1986, the National Council for Science and Technology Communication (NCSTC) had a brilliant idea. They suggested to the Government of India that February 28 should be celebrated as National Science Day. The government loved the idea, and voila! February 28, 1987, marked the very first National Science Day celebration.

Why Do We Celebrate National Science Day?

Well, the government has a pretty cool reason. They want to spread the word far and wide about how science affects our daily lives. It’s also a chance to clap for all the amazing things scientists have achieved and chat about new ideas and technologies. Plus, it’s a big thumbs-up to all the science enthusiasts out there and a fun way to make science super popular!

Now, onto this year's National Science Day theme!

It’s ‘Indigenous Technologies for Viksit Bharat’! This means we’re focusing on all the awesome inventions and creations right here in our own country. Get ready for a celebration of homegrown innovation!”
