A widespread protest against Trinamool Congress leader Shah Jahan Sheikh is taking place in Sandeshkhali in North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal.

55-Day Chase Ends: Sandeshkhali’s Notorious Fugitive Sheikh Shahjahan Arrested

Trinamool Congress leader Sheikh Shah Jahan, the main accused in the Sandeshkhali case, has been arrested by the police.
Sheikh Shahjahan was arrested by a special team of Bengal Police around midnight from North 24 Parganas district. He was on the run for 55 days. Basirhat was taken to court after his arrest.

Officials said that the group was monitoring the activities of the leader just before the arrest.

The arrest comes three days after the Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court ordered the inclusion of Sheikh Shahjahan in the Sandeshkhali case.

On February 26, the Calcutta HC justice asked for notice in the case, saying “there is no reason why he should not be arrested”.

“Public notice will be given in this case. There is no stay order in Sandeshkhali cases. There is no reason why he should not be arrested,” the court said.

The ruling Trinamool Congress hailed the arrest, saying it was possible only after the court cleared the culprits and accused the opposition of taking advantage of the “embargo” that preceded his arrest.

The BJP claimed that the arrest was staged and that he was in the safe custody of the West Bengal Police.
